The Industrial Revolution

How did the Industrial Revolution change the world?

In the last part of the 18^th century, a wave of political and social revolutions began in France and swept across Europe and the Americas. During this period, an economic revolution – a revolution in industry – was transforming Great Britain. In the 19^th century these changes in industry spread to other parts of Europe and to the United States. Once started, the process of industrialization moved faster and faster and dramatically changed the way people lived.

Despite the problems created by rapid industrialization, the Industrial Revolution was a triumph. It allowed people to really change their physical environments, increase their standard of living, and accelerate reforms in society and government.

Though short, our lesson will describe the Industrial Revolution and how it changed the societies, economies, and governments of the world.

The French Revolution and Napoleon

What are some of the lessons we can learn from the French Revolution?

The ideals of Enlightenment thinkers, which had influenced the Americans’ war for independence, also played a part in the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. French society was based on feudal ideas, economic inequality, special class privileges, and absolute rule. The French Revolution overthrew long-established customs and institutions and proclaimed the ideas of liberty and equality. Individual rights were recognized and representative government was established, bringing lasting reforms to French society and government.

Napoleon Bonaparte, who became emperor of the French, carried the ideas of the Revolution to other nations but was stopped in his attempt to dominate Europe. The French Revolution and Napoleon’s empire changed the course of world history, ushering in an age of liberalism, and nationalism tearing apart old empires and building new nations.

On a sheet of green pad paper, write an essay about ANY of the following essay tasks. You can only make ONE of the essays.

1. The French Revolution brought about waves of nationalism that spread throughout France. Under Napoleon, nationalism spurred French armies to success. The tricolor flag, the song La Marseillaise, and the words Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity all helped unite the French people in a cause to defend their nation. What spurred nationalism in the 1896 Philippine Revolution? Think about the symbols our ancestors used and their common goals.
2. In the French Revolution, the Third Estate revolted to topple the Old Regime. The Communists of China caused a similar upheaval when the peasants of the country united to end their oppression by the landed and moneyed class. Research the Chinese Civil War of 1945-1949. How does it compare to the French Revolution? Compare their causes, effects, and goals.
3. Research about the battles of Napoleon, from Marengo to Waterloo. Select at least 5 important battles. Summarize how Napoleon won or lost each battle. What strategies or tactics did Napoleon use? What strategies or tactics did his enemies use? What were the keys to military success then?

Group incentive activity – Rap Battle in History [group, 1 class credit for good participation, 3 class credits for winning]

Create a full-page comic strip on a sheet of short bond paper. Your comic strip should contain 6-10 panels telling various aspects of the French Revolution from the perspective of the following:

• Team France: The Reign of Terror from the bourgeoisie point of view
• Team Netherlands: The Execution of Louis XVI from a royalist’s point of view
• Team USA: The National Assembly from an American congressman’s point of view
• Team Spain: The French Occupation of Spain from the Spanish point of view
• Team Italy: The Battle of Marengo from an Italian noble’s point of view
• Team Britain: The Battle of Waterloo from the British point of view
• Team Germany: The Battle of Jena from the Prussian point of view
• Team Russia: The Invasion of Russia from the Russian point of view
• Team Austria: The Congress of Vienna from the Austrian point of view

Any media can be used for the comic strips. Teams that will comply satisfactorily will get a point or a flag, but the best team will get three points or flags. The best comics will also be posted on the classroom’s bulletin board and get a chance to be used for the exam.
