WH: Agenda 9-13 January 2012

The Enlightenment and the American Revolution

How has the Enlightenment shaped our ideas of governance and social order?

The way in which people live and think today has been shaped to a great extent by important developments that took place in Western Europe from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Thinkers tried to look at government and society in a systematic way akin to the way scientists viewed the natural world. They believed that by using reason, they could solve society’s problems and improve people’s lives. This period became known as the Enlightenment or Age of Reason. Later, many Enlightenment ideas would dramatically shape the destiny of the United States of America.
